MLB Report

It sure would be nice to see a Red Sox/Cubs World Series.

I've decided I am going to be a Sox fan this October.

A Bo-sox/Cubbies series would be hella cool. Booth could you explain what the deciding factor is in who the wild card team plays. In other words why the Red Sox/A's and not Red Sox/Twins?

For some strange reason, Bud Selig and co. decided that it would be a bad idea for wildcard teams to play their first round series against the team from their own division.

Normally, in all sports tournaments, the team with the best record faces the team with the worst record. The seceond best team faces the second worst team, and so on. Baseball works like that too. . . in theory. The way this years field shakes out is not the best one to consider for a thorough understanding, but I'll do my best.

The Yankees had the best record in the AL. That means they get home field advantage and a first round matchup against the playoff team with the worst record, which this year, is the Twins, but in most cases would be the wildcard team. Let's assume that the Twins had a better record than the Red Sox, that is, the Red Sox have the worst record among AL playoff teams. One would assume that they would play the Yankees in the first round, in keeping with the best team vs. the worst team scenario. But since the Yanks and Red Sox are in the same division, they do not play each other in the first round. So the team with the best record plays the division winner with the worst record, the Twins, and the wildcard Red Sox play the division winner with the better record, the A's.

Ultimately, the system is designed so that the very best teams have the "easiest" shot to get to the World Series, giving us the best possible match up.

Deacon disappoints me. If you have no particular loyalty to any team contending, and you are not enlightened enough to root for the Yankees, I don't see how you can root for anyone but the Cubs.

The band waggon of the Yankees...sheesh. Well thanks for enlightening us Matt.

i like every team in the playoffs this year except for the yankees. the cubs/sox would be a great series but also tragic because youd hate to see either team lose after being so close for the first time in forever. id really like to see braves/sox because then id hopefully be able to get a ticket.

So much for that.
